Title / Titel Ainu people and Switzerland : Ainu heritage in perspective, catalogue raisonné of the Swiss collections
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung In Swiss museums and some private collections, we can identify more than 500 objects representing Ainu culture from northern Japan and Sakhalin Island, as well as an important amount of significant Japanese ancient paintings and photographs depicting the Ainu.
The aim of this doctoral thesis project is to propose for the first time an in depth study of the Ainu collections from the Swiss collections which mirror the trends of the Ainu studies during the 19th and 20th century. These collections will be compared to other major collections elsewhere in the world and in Japan. Through the collections, the role of Ainu material and visual culture in the contemporary Ainu society will be analyzed in order to offer an etic and emic view on the Ainu heritage.
