Title / Titel Outcome after delayed Axillary Nerve Reconstruction with Interposition of Suralis Nerve Graft
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Mircrosurgical repair of injured brachial plexus or isolated peripheral nerves such as the axillary nerve has been established during the past three decades. Most reports mention an age of the patients older than 40 years and a reconstruction of the affected nerves later than 6 months after trauma to be negative predictors for functional outcome. Even though we agree that it is favourable to perform surgical repair within the first 6 months after trauma and in younger patients, a delayed procedure which is most often due to delayed referral to the specialist does not necessarily lead to unsatisfactory functional results. According to the experience of the senior author (NAL), the same is true for patiens older than 40 years at the time of reconstruction.
