| Summary / Zusammenfassung | As the last full commentary on Isocrates' Archidamus has been published by G.E.Benseler as early as in 1854, a new comprehensive study on this still puzzling oration by the famous Athenian politician and writer seems long overdue. Starting with the textual transmission and a translation into German, I intend to pay in the introduction special attention to the question of the purpose of this piece of literature, to its complex and delusive literary character, and also to the different forms of its reception through the times and the attraction it still exerts on us nowadays. Finally, as main part of the thesis, there will be a detailed commentary focusing in particular on linguistic and historical problems and also inquiring into the rhetorical strategy which Isocrates adopts in this fascinating speech. | ||
