Title / Titel Variability in bill morphology of Nuthatches (Sitta europaea)
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung The cause of the seasonal variation in bill morphology of the European nuthatch is still poorly known. In this context, we investigate the influence of habitat and foraging technique on bill morphology. Furthermore, we like to find out whether niche differentiation is taking place in a Nuthatch population living in a forest composed of two different habitat types. We therefore developed a Nuthatch ringing program in order to observe them in the field and measure their bill morphology. Additionally, with histological sections through the bill of accidentally died Nuthatches, we analyse the growing pattern / intensity of the rhamphotheca.
Keywords / Suchbegriffe European Nuthatch, Sitta europaea, bill morphology, niche differentiation, ecomorphology, seasonal variation
